Beyond the sublime
Time-based
The Scots College Inspired by the surrealists and the political controversy surrounding the censorship of Bill Henson's photography in 2008, my film explores the impact of censorship upon the imagination of contemporary artists. By appropriating RenĂ© Magritte's work, the film explores how the surrealists attempted to re-interpret reality through the transcendence of their dreams. We follow a young man wandering through the surreal world of his unconscious mind, while his thoughts are being censored by the regulators of society, symbolising the artistic desire to deny boundaries placed upon it by society’s cultural and political institutions.
